Not a Consumer Christian

I recently started attending a new church. As part of the membership process, I sat down with some of the elders to talk about my spiritual past. It was such a good experience to reveal things about me, and not feel judged. Another topic that came out of this conversation was the topic of service. I told them, “I really can’t be a consumer Christian.” They were very intrigued by my statement. To me, it is just a way of life. The Church doesn’t exist to simply serve our needs. If we look at it this way, when we no longer like what its serving, we will move on to one that is serving what we like. This could be music, lighting, seating, preaching, and everything in between. However, if we take our cue from Jesus, and see the Church as our ultimate opportunity to serve, we will heap the harvest of selflessness.

How do you balance Christian service with family and work commitments?
